Optical Backplane Polymer

Embedded optical backplanes offer both ultra-high bandwidth and the design freedom of a more distributed architecture. Critically, such backplanes avoid the need for large amounts of fiber at the back of a system, which limits system expansion and adds to system maintenance complexity. Vital to all embedded optical backplanes is a material and process for the deposition of low loss multimode waveguides.

The material should exhibit low loss, be photowritable for ease of manufacture, and able to withstand the temperature and pressure regime of lamination (180° C at 350psi) and solder reflow (up to 250° C for 20s) during PWB manufacture. Terahertz's Truemode Backplane? polymer is a highly cross-linked multi-functional acrylate.Optimization of the composition ensures good adhesion to FR4, enhanced thermal stability, humidity resistance, and ultra-low loss of <0.04 dB/cm at a wavelength of 850 nm.
